White tepees dot the far plain at left beside a low orange disc, and pink clouds drift across a blue-green sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIn June 1871, travelling west from Philadelphia to illustrate Yellowstone for a magazine, Moran stopped at Green River, Wyoming, and made a small field study of its cliffs that he inscribed as his first sketch made in the West. Green River was by then a busy railroad town, but his paintings of the place leave the town out altogether. He completed this canvas ten years later; it entered the National Gallery of Art in 2011 as a gift of the Milligan and Thomson families.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe original: oil on canvas, 1881, National Gallery of Art, Washington.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThomas Moran (1837–1926) was an American painter and printmaker, born in Bolton, Lancashire; his family emigrated to the United States in 1844. Apprenticed to a Philadelphia wood-engraving firm, he taught himself watercolour and in 1862 went to England to study the work of J. M. W. Turner. In 1871 he joined Ferdinand Hayden's government survey of Yellowstone; his sketches, with William Henry Jackson's photographs, helped persuade Congress to make it the first national park in 1872, the year the government bought his painting The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. He went on to paint the Grand Canyon, the Rocky Mountains and Chasm of the Colorado (1873–74). His work is held by the Gilcrease Museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ePrinted as a museum-grade giclée on Hahnemühle fine art paper using 12-ink archival pigment printing.
