Apprenticed to a Philadelphia wood-engraving firm, he taught himself watercolour and in 1862 went to England to study the work of J. M. W. Turner. In 1871 he joined Ferdinand Hayden's government survey of Yellowstone; his sketches, with William Henry Jackson's photographs, helped persuade Congress to make it the first national park in 1872, the year the government bought his painting The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. He went on to paint the Grand Canyon, the Rocky Mountains and Chasm of the Colorado (1873–74).
