Folds and gullies run down the slopes in fine graphite lines, tinted with soft grey, pink and green wash, with white gouache lifted along the crest and in the sky. The sheet is a warm buff-grey. The title, the date August 8, 1879, and Moran's signature are written in pencil at the lower left.

The original: watercolor, gouache and graphite, 1879; Cleveland Museum of Art.

Thomas Moran (1837–1926) was an American painter and printmaker, born in Bolton, Lancashire; his family emigrated to the United States in 1844. Apprenticed to a Philadelphia wood-engraving firm, he taught himself watercolour and in 1862 went to England to study the work of J. M. W. Turner. In 1871 he joined Ferdinand Hayden's government survey of Yellowstone; his sketches, with William Henry Jackson's photographs, helped persuade Congress to make it the first national park in 1872, the year the government bought his painting The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. He went on to paint the Grand Canyon, the Rocky Mountains and Chasm of the Colorado (1873–74). His work is held by the Gilcrease Museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
