thomas-nast-emancipation-wood-engraving-print
Thomas Nast — Emancipation | Wood Engraving Print

A wood engraving in black and rose, built around a large roundel where a family gathers by a stove marked Union: a woman in a striped dress tends a kettle, a bearded father lifts a small child, and a grandmother in spectacles sits beside them. A smaller roundel holds Abraham Lincoln's portrait. Scenes of slavery fill the left: fugitives chased through a marsh, an auction stand, a woman under a raised whip. Scenes of freedom fill the right: children running to a Public School, a man at a Cashier's window. Emancipation arches across the top; Th. Nast signs lower right.

The original: wood engraving printed in black and rose on wove paper, published by S. Bott, Philadelphia, 1865; Library of Congress.

Thomas Nast (1840–1902) was a German-born American caricaturist and political cartoonist. Born in Landau, he came to New York as a child, studied at the National Academy of Design, and drew for Harper's Weekly from 1859 to 1860 and again from 1862 to 1886. His cartoons backed the Radical Republicans, attacked opponents of civil rights for Black Southerners, and were instrumental in the downfall of William Tweed and the Tammany Hall machine. He is credited with first drawing the Republican Party as an elephant, and his Santa Claus of 1863, drawn during the Civil War, is generally recognised as the first picture of the modern Santa Claus.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
