Born in Landau, he came to New York as a child, studied at the National Academy of Design, and drew for Harper's Weekly from 1859 to 1860 and again from 1862 to 1886. His cartoons backed the Radical Republicans, attacked opponents of civil rights for Black Southerners, and were instrumental in the downfall of William Tweed and the Tammany Hall machine. He is credited with first drawing the Republican Party as an elephant, and his Santa Claus of 1863, drawn during the Civil War, is generally recognised as the first picture of the modern Santa Claus.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEach print is a giclée, printed to order.
