It was sold at the Commonwealth sale of Charles's collection in 1651, passed through the Kaunitz and Czernin collections in Vienna, and was given to the gallery by the Kress Foundation in 1961.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe original: oil on canvas, c. 1546-1550; National Gallery of Art, Washington.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eTitian (Tiziano Vecellio, c. 1488–1576) was an Italian painter of the Venetian Renaissance, born in Pieve di Cadore. Sources disagree on his training; early writers name Giovanni Bellini and Giorgione among his teachers. He worked mainly in Venice, with periods in Padua, Ferrara, Mantua and Urbino, and became court painter to Emperor Charles V in 1533 and later worked for Philip II of Spain. He painted portraits, religious scenes and mythological subjects, using rich colour and increasingly loose brushwork; his late Poesie series for Philip II drew on Ovid. His work is held by the Uffizi, the Museo del Prado and the National Gallery, London.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEach print is a giclée, printed to order.
