titian-flora-fine-art-print
Titian — Flora | Fine Art Print

A woman with auburn hair in loose ringlets looks away to the left, half-smiling, against a dark ground. Her white pleated chemise has slipped from one shoulder, and over it she gathers a rose-pink brocade mantle at the hip with one hand. In her other hand, lowered at the lower left, she holds a small bunch of flowers with green leaves.

The Uffizi describes the sitter as Flora, the nymph bride of Zephyr, a name traced to the historian Joachim von Sandrart, who saw the picture around 1635; the museum reads it more broadly as female beauty joining modesty and sensuality. The canvas later passed to Archduke Leopold Wilhelm and reached Florence in 1793 in an exchange with the Belvedere in Vienna. Engravings after it were made from the sixteenth century on.

The original: oil on canvas, c. 1517; Uffizi Gallery, Florence.

Titian (Tiziano Vecellio, c. 1488–1576) was an Italian painter of the Venetian Renaissance, born in Pieve di Cadore. Sources disagree on his training; early writers name Giovanni Bellini and Giorgione among his teachers. He worked mainly in Venice, with periods in Padua, Ferrara, Mantua and Urbino, and became court painter to Emperor Charles V in 1533 and later worked for Philip II of Spain. He painted portraits, religious scenes and mythological subjects, using rich colour and increasingly loose brushwork; his late Poesie series for Philip II drew on Ovid. His work is held by the Uffizi, the Museo del Prado and the National Gallery, London.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
