Behind him a gold brocade curtain patterned with white rosettes falls beside a dark drape, and a hazy landscape shows at the far left. The chair seat is red, studded with gold, and its carved arms are painted in loose gold strokes.

The original: oil on canvas, about 1550-56; Cincinnati Art Museum, Cincinnati.

Titian (Tiziano Vecellio, c. 1488–1576) was an Italian painter of the Venetian Renaissance, born in Pieve di Cadore. Sources disagree on his training; early writers name Giovanni Bellini and Giorgione among his teachers. He worked mainly in Venice, with periods in Padua, Ferrara, Mantua and Urbino, and became court painter to Emperor Charles V in 1533 and later worked for Philip II of Spain. He painted portraits, religious scenes and mythological subjects, using rich colour and increasingly loose brushwork; his late Poesie series for Philip II drew on Ovid. His work is held by the Uffizi, the Museo del Prado and the National Gallery, London.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
