titian-pope-alexander-vi-presenting-bishop-jacopo-pesaro-to-saint-peter-fine-art-print
Titian — Pope Alexander VI Presenting Bishop Jacopo Pesaro to Saint Peter | Fine Art Print

At the left Saint Peter, haloed and bearded, sits on a stone plinth in a pink-red robe and an ochre cloak, a closed book on his knee and one hand raised. A pope in a white papal tiara and a green, gold-patterned cope stands behind the kneeling bishop, who wears a black cloak and grips a red banner bearing a coat of arms. A steel helmet rests on the red-and-cream chequered floor, galleys ride the sea behind them, and a small paper label with Italian lettering sits at the lower centre.

The kneeling bishop, Jacopo Pesaro, commanded the papal fleet and recaptured the island of Santa Maura from the Turks in 1502; the painting recalls that victory and was probably ordered for his palazzo in Venice. Giovanni Bellini designed the composition and Titian carried it out. The Antwerp museum notes that research shows it to be Titian's earliest conserved work, and the only painting by him in a Belgian public collection.

The original: oil on canvas, 1503-1506; Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp (KMSKA), Antwerp.

Titian (Tiziano Vecellio, c. 1488–1576) was an Italian painter of the Venetian Renaissance, born in Pieve di Cadore. Sources disagree on his training; early writers name Giovanni Bellini and Giorgione among his teachers. He worked mainly in Venice, with periods in Padua, Ferrara, Mantua and Urbino, and became court painter to Emperor Charles V in 1533 and later worked for Philip II of Spain. He painted portraits, religious scenes and mythological subjects, using rich colour and increasingly loose brushwork; his late Poesie series for Philip II drew on Ovid. His work is held by the Uffizi, the Museo del Prado and the National Gallery, London.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
