titian-portrait-of-a-lady-la-bella-fine-art-print
Titian — Portrait of a Lady (La Bella) | Fine Art Print

A young woman with honey-gold hair coiled and braided under gold pins looks out from a dark brown ground, a pearl drop at her ear and a long gold chain falling over her bodice. Her blue damask gown, stitched with gold, has a low square neckline edged in white, and her burgundy velvet sleeves are slashed to puff out white linen. A braided gold cord with a tassel hangs from her hands.

Francesco Maria della Rovere, Duke of Urbino, acquired this portrait in Venice around 1536-38; in a letter he called it the portrait of the woman in the blue dress and never named her, so her identity is still open. It reached Florence in 1631 with the inheritance of Vittoria della Rovere, and a late eighteenth-century guide gave it its nickname. It hangs in the Palatine Gallery at Pitti Palace.

The original: oil on canvas, 1536-38; Palatine Gallery, Palazzo Pitti, Florence.

Titian (Tiziano Vecellio, c. 1488–1576) was an Italian painter of the Venetian Renaissance, born in Pieve di Cadore. Sources disagree on his training; early writers name Giovanni Bellini and Giorgione among his teachers. He worked mainly in Venice, with periods in Padua, Ferrara, Mantua and Urbino, and became court painter to Emperor Charles V in 1533 and later worked for Philip II of Spain. He painted portraits, religious scenes and mythological subjects, using rich colour and increasingly loose brushwork; his late Poesie series for Philip II drew on Ovid. His work is held by the Uffizi, the Museo del Prado and the National Gallery, London.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
