At the lower left a boy in a mail shirt looks up at him as he holds out a helmet. The man's armored hand rests near his sword hilt at his waist. The ground behind them is a dark brown.

The Getty Museum places this portrait's making in Bologna in the winter of 1533 and describes it as the beginning of the standing state portrait, a prototype that proved influential in Western art. The sitter commanded the imperial forces in Italy under Emperor Charles V and ordered the picture in early 1533. The page offers him his helmet while he is absorbed in thought, according to the museum.

The original: oil on canvas, 1533; J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.

Titian (Tiziano Vecellio, c. 1488–1576) was an Italian painter of the Venetian Renaissance, born in Pieve di Cadore. Sources disagree on his training; early writers name Giovanni Bellini and Giorgione among his teachers. He worked mainly in Venice, with periods in Padua, Ferrara, Mantua and Urbino, and became court painter to Emperor Charles V in 1533 and later worked for Philip II of Spain. He painted portraits, religious scenes and mythological subjects, using rich colour and increasingly loose brushwork; his late Poesie series for Philip II drew on Ovid. His work is held by the Uffizi, the Museo del Prado and the National Gallery, London.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
