titian-ranuccio-farnese-fine-art-print
Titian — Ranuccio Farnese | Fine Art Print

A boy with short dark hair looks out from a dark ground, one hand held at his hip beneath a black cloak and the other holding a pale glove at his side. He wears a rose and cream doublet fastened with a row of small buttons, a small white ruff at the neck and a gilded belt with a sword hilt at the waist. A white eight-pointed cross is stitched on the cloak at his chest, and the painter's name is lettered at the right.

The National Gallery of Art traces the portrait through the Farnese family inventories from 1644, where it is described as a youth in the habit of Malta by Titian. It passed by inheritance in 1734 to the Bourbon collection in Naples, and the Samuel H. Kress Foundation bought it in 1948 before giving it to the gallery in 1952.

The original: oil on canvas, 1541-1542; National Gallery of Art, Washington.

Titian (Tiziano Vecellio, c. 1488–1576) was an Italian painter of the Venetian Renaissance, born in Pieve di Cadore. Sources disagree on his training; early writers name Giovanni Bellini and Giorgione among his teachers. He worked mainly in Venice, with periods in Padua, Ferrara, Mantua and Urbino, and became court painter to Emperor Charles V in 1533 and later worked for Philip II of Spain. He painted portraits, religious scenes and mythological subjects, using rich colour and increasingly loose brushwork; his late Poesie series for Philip II drew on Ovid. His work is held by the Uffizi, the Museo del Prado and the National Gallery, London.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
