titian-venus-with-a-mirror-fine-art-print
Titian — Venus with a Mirror | Fine Art Print

Half-length and fair-haired, Venus sits turned to the right, her braided hair threaded with pearls, one hand pressed to her chest. A crimson velvet wrap trimmed with fur and gold-and-silver embroidery gathers at her hips. Two putti attend her: one, seen from behind with grey-violet wings, holds a black-framed mirror up to her, while the other, behind, raises a wreath. A dark green curtain hangs at upper left and a yellow and brown striped cover lies across the seat.

The National Gallery of Art considers this the finest surviving version of a composition that Titian and his workshop painted in at least thirty variants. He kept it until his death, more than twenty years after painting it, perhaps as a model for the workshop. Beneath it lies an earlier canvas of two standing figures, turned 90 degrees; the man's jacket seems to have become the fur-lined red velvet around Venus's hip.

The original: oil on canvas, about 1555; National Gallery of Art, Washington.

Titian (Tiziano Vecellio, c. 1488–1576) was an Italian painter of the Venetian Renaissance, born in Pieve di Cadore. Sources disagree on his training; early writers name Giovanni Bellini and Giorgione among his teachers. He worked mainly in Venice, with periods in Padua, Ferrara, Mantua and Urbino, and became court painter to Emperor Charles V in 1533 and later worked for Philip II of Spain. He painted portraits, religious scenes and mythological subjects, using rich colour and increasingly loose brushwork; his late Poesie series for Philip II drew on Ovid. His work is held by the Uffizi, the Museo del Prado and the National Gallery, London.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
