Faint vertical seams mark the screen's panel divisions.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eTosa Mitsuoki (1617–1691) was a Japanese painter and head of the Tosa school. He succeeded his father, Tosa Mitsunori, moved the family workshop from Sakai to Kyoto in 1634 at the emperor's request, and in 1654 was appointed edokoro azukari, head painter to the imperial court. He revived the classical Yamato-e manner in bird-and-flower paintings, especially of quail, and in scenes of famous places and the seasons, combining fine outline with passages of ink-wash brushwork drawn from Chinese painting.
