In that short period he produced around 140 known designs, chiefly kabuki actor portraits, published through the leading Edo publisher Tsutaya Jūzaburō. His actor prints are unusually blunt and psychologically direct, exaggerating individual features rather than idealising them, a departure that unsettled contemporary taste but later secured his reputation as one of the greatest ukiyo-e print designers.
