Born in Chicago, she won a scholarship to the Art Institute of Chicago but left after a year to support her family, and worked for an advertising agency. At 19, shortly after she was diagnosed with tuberculosis, the Penn Publishing Company commissioned her to illustrate the Comtesse de Ségur's Old French Fairy Tales (1920). Tanglewood Tales (1921) and Arabian Nights (1928) followed, all three for Penn.
