Herbert Dunton (1878–1936) was an American painter and illustrator of the West. Born in Augusta, Maine, he studied at the Cowles Art School in Boston and between 1896 and 1911 spent summers in the West as a cowboy or hunter. From about 1903 he worked in New York as an illustrator for magazines including Collier's and Harper's Monthly. In 1912 Ernest Blumenschein told him about Taos; he visited that year, moved there in 1914 and in 1915 was one of the six founders of the Taos Society of Artists. There he painted cowboys, hunters and the woods and wildlife of the surrounding country.
