Trained first in calico-pattern printing in Glasgow, he was taken on by the botanist William Jackson Hooker and moved to London, becoming the principal artist for Curtis's Botanical Magazine, for which he produced around 2,700 plates over more than forty years. His lithographs, drawn directly onto the stone and often hand-coloured, combine botanical precision with a strong sense of the living plant, and illustrated major publications including A Century of Orchidaceous Plants and The Botany of the Antarctic Voyage.
