He began studying painting with Shen Zhou in 1489, and only at 53 was he appointed to the Hanlin Academy in Beijing, leaving after three years for Suzhou. There he became, with Shen Zhou, the leading figure of the Wu school of scholar-painters, working in manners from the finely detailed to the freely washed, and writing in all four major calligraphic scripts. He painted and wrote poems on the Humble Administrator's Garden, built by his friend Wang Xianchen, including an album of 1551. His pupils included his son Wen Jia.
