will-bradley-the-chap-book-thanksgiving-number-1895-vintage-thanksgiving-print
Will Bradley — The Chap-Book, Thanksgiving Number, 1895 | Vintage Thanksgiving Print

Two dark-haired women, one tall and one small, move across a deep blue ground in billowing red and black gowns, each balancing a tray heaped with red fruit. The tall figure lifts the larger tray high at upper left, and the smaller figure, in front of her, holds hers at the centre. Huge black letters spell 'CHAP BOOK' across the top beside a small red 'THE', with 'THANKS' at left and 'GIVING NO.' at right in red, and the signature 'Will H. Bradley' sits at lower left.

The original: a colour lithograph poster, 1895, Boston Public Library.

Will Bradley (1868–1962) was an American illustrator, typographer and designer working in the Art Nouveau style. Born in Boston, he was apprenticed to a printer in Ishpeming, Michigan, at twelve and worked as an engraver and typographer in Chicago before going freelance. His flat, two-dimensional posters and covers, drawing on the Arts and Crafts movement and Japanese woodblock prints, helped popularise the art poster in the United States; he ran his own Wayside Press, and several typefaces were cut from his lettering. He later directed films. His posters are held by the Library of Congress and the University of Delaware, and in 1954 he received the AIGA Medal.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
