It depicts the damned alchemist Capocchio bitten on the neck by the trickster Gianni Schicchi, as Dante and Virgil look on. The painting is held by the Musée d'Orsay, Paris.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWilliam-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825–1905) was a French academic painter. Born in La Rochelle into a family of wine and olive-oil merchants, he trained at the municipal school of drawing in Bordeaux and then at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, in the studio of François-Édouard Picot. He won the Prix de Rome in 1850 and spent 1851–54 at the Villa Medici. Exhibiting at the Paris Salon throughout his working life, he painted mythological, religious and rustic genre subjects, among them The Birth of Venus (1879) and Nymphs and Satyr (1873).
