In the open ground before them an unclothed man stands with arms folded, glancing back, while at the right another recoils, hands raised, hair on end, as a cloud of smoke rises from a long-snouted serpent coiled on the ground and streams toward his body. Tongues of flame hang from the dark sky above. Engraved in fine line with crosshatched clouds.

The original: engraving, ca. 1825-1827; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

William Blake (1757–1827) was an English poet, painter and printmaker. Apprenticed to the engraver James Basire and later a student at the Royal Academy, he invented relief etching in 1788, a method for printing text and image together that he used for Songs of Innocence and of Experience (1789/1794) and his prophetic books. Largely unrecognised in his lifetime, he worked with his wife Catherine Boucher as colourist, and his late watercolour series illustrating the Book of Job was among his last major projects. His work is held by the British Museum, Tate Britain and the Fitzwilliam Museum.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
