Apprenticed to the engraver James Basire and later a student at the Royal Academy, he invented relief etching in 1788, a method for printing text and image together that he used for Songs of Innocence and of Experience (1789\/1794) and his prophetic books. Largely unrecognised in his lifetime, he worked with his wife Catherine Boucher as colourist, and his late watercolour series illustrating the Book of Job was among his last major projects.
