Graham Robertson before reaching Cleveland in 1950. Cleveland reads the infant's outstretched arms as foreshadowing the Crucifixion, and notes that Blake, though he rejected institutional religion, drew much of his art from a personal reading of the Bible.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe original: black, gray and brown ink applied with pen and point of brush, with gray, pink, yellow and green wash, c. 1805; Cleveland Museum of Art.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWilliam Blake (1757–1827) was an English poet, painter and printmaker. Apprenticed to the engraver James Basire and later a student at the Royal Academy, he invented relief etching in 1788, a method for printing text and image together that he used for Songs of Innocence and of Experience (1789\/1794) and his prophetic books. Largely unrecognised in his lifetime, he worked with his wife Catherine Boucher as colourist, and his late watercolour series illustrating the Book of Job was among his last major projects.
