Born in Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire, he emigrated to New York in 1850, trained as a wood engraver and settled in San Francisco in 1859. He studied in Düsseldorf from 1869 and in Munich in 1883–85, and from 1872 was a close friend of John Muir, camping with him in the High Sierra. His early Sierra views were detailed and sunlit; later, drawing on the Barbizon painters, he turned to broad brushwork and dark, tonal, suggestive landscapes. Many of his paintings, including most of his small panels of the 1890s, burned in his studio in the 1906 earthquake and fire.
