He studied at the National Academy of Design in New York and then in Munich under Alexander von Wagner and Karl von Piloty, returning to teach at the Art Students League and later to found the Shinnecock Hills summer school on Long Island. His portraits, park and beach scenes and still lifes are painted with a fluent, confident brush indebted to Impressionism, and his teaching shaped a generation of American painters.
