Pale blue, fringed flowers on olive stems fill the upper and lower bands, with pink buds between them. In the central band, four large flowers with striped black-and-white petals, flushed pink toward an olive dotted centre, sit beneath a row of pink-and-white curled leaves. Large olive and white leaves arch over each band. A block-printed cotton textile; the design dates from 1883, and this length was made in 1917-25.

The original: cotton, plain weave; block printed, design 1883, made 1917-25; Art Institute of Chicago.

William Morris (1834–1896) was an English designer, writer and a leading figure of the Arts and Crafts movement. He studied at Oxford, worked briefly in the office of the architect G. E. Street, and in 1861 founded the decorative arts firm later known as Morris & Co., through which he designed wallpapers, textiles and books. His patterns, dense flowing arrangements of leaves, flowers and birds drawn from close observation of nature, argued for craftsmanship and honest materials against mass industrial production, an argument he extended in the books of his Kelmscott Press. His work is held by the Victoria and Albert Museum, the William Morris Gallery and the Ashmolean Museum.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
