william-morris-spring-thicket-botanical-art-print
William Morris — Spring Thicket | Botanical Art Print

A slate-blue ground is crowded with brown branches bearing small white five-petalled blossoms with dark centres. The pattern mirrors on a central vertical axis: large curling leaves in sky blue and sage green fan out from the middle, with closed cream and pale green buds on yellow stems curving away to either side and a pale open flower at the foot of the axis. Black outlines and fine hatching shape every leaf. This is a wallpaper design dated 1894.

William Morris (1834–1896) was an English designer, writer and a leading figure of the Arts and Crafts movement. He studied at Oxford, worked briefly in the office of the architect G. E. Street, and in 1861 founded the decorative arts firm later known as Morris & Co., through which he designed wallpapers, textiles and books. His patterns, dense flowing arrangements of leaves, flowers and birds drawn from close observation of nature, argued for craftsmanship and honest materials against mass industrial production, an argument he extended in the books of his Kelmscott Press. His work is held by the Victoria and Albert Museum, the William Morris Gallery and the Ashmolean Museum.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
