Leigh, N.Y., 1917 at lower left.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWilliam Robinson Leigh (1866–1955) was an American painter of the Southwest and of Africa. Born in Berkeley County, West Virginia, he entered the Maryland Institute in Baltimore at fourteen and then trained at the Royal Academy in Munich, winning medals there between 1884 and 1892. In 1906 the Santa Fe Railway sent him west to paint the Grand Canyon, and Hopi and Navajo people became his principal subjects. In 1926 he travelled to Africa at Carl Akeley's invitation for the American Museum of Natural History, where he later painted diorama backgrounds for the Hall of African Mammals.
