In Korean painting the egret stood for the scholar's reclusive life.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe original: hanging scroll, ink on paper, late 1800s, Cleveland Museum of Art.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eYang Ki-hun (1843–1919?) was a Korean painter and calligrapher of the late Joseon dynasty, a native of Pyongyang and a scholar-official who served as a court painter to King Gojong, painting a number of works for the northern palace at Pyongyang. He was best known for birds and flowers, and especially for geese among reeds, which he painted as single scrolls, pairs and large folding screens; the pairing carried a wish for a comfortable old age. He observed the water birds of the Taedong River estuary closely, and his plum and bamboo paintings keep the literati symbolism of the Four Gentlemen.
