He was also a painter, poet and calligrapher, and worked to preserve the documents and paintings handed down in his family. His Plum Branch, painted in the year of his death, sets a strong, angular branch against thin, precise offshoots dotted with blossom on a grey ground; the plum, flowering in late winter, stood for meeting hardship with dignity.
