Behind them a dark grey hill rises against a burnished gold sky, and a boy in red with a pointed red cap climbs a tall evergreen at right. Small corner panels in red, black and gold geometric patterns fill the square around the letter.

The original: an illuminated initial on a cutting, tempera and gold leaf on parchment, made in the 1430s; National Gallery of Art, Washington.

Zanobi Strozzi (1412–1468) was a Florentine painter and illuminator, a pupil and assistant of Fra Angelico, known especially for his manuscript illuminations. He decorated a psalter for the Benedictine Badia Fiorentina and painted altarpieces in a graceful, decorative style, such as a Nativity with a choreographed arc of angels long ascribed to Fra Angelico. His work is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Art in Washington.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
