Arnold Böcklin (1827–1901) was a Swiss Symbolist painter whose Isle of the Dead (1880, in five versions) became one of the defining images of 19th-century Symbolism — a vision of funerary mystery so compelling that it was owned by Sigmund Freud, inspired Rachmaninoff's orchestral tone poem, and influenced the Surrealists. Working in Munich, Rome, and Florence, he produced mythological and allegorical paintings of elemental power — centaurs, mermaids, Cyclopes, and allegories of death — that established the visual language of Germanic Symbolism and anticipate the dream imagery of de Chirico and Dalí.
