Henri Matisse

Henri Matisse (1869–1954) was the defining figure of Fauvism — a movement that replaced tonal modelling with pure, expressive colour. Trained under Gustave Moreau in Paris, he spent decades transforming Western painting through portraiture, landscape, still life, and large-scale mural commissions. His final decade, spent largely bedridden, produced his celebrated papiers découpés: compositions cut entirely from painted paper, which he described as "drawing with scissors." Works from this series — Icarus, Blue Nude II, The Heart — are now among the most iconic and collected prints of the 20th century.
