About Henri Matisse
Henri Matisse was a French painter, born on 31 December 1869 in Le Cateau-Cambrésis, in northern France, into a family of weavers. He studied law first and worked as a clerk before turning to art. In 1891 he enrolled at the Académie Julian in Paris, and from 1892 he studied in the studio of the Symbolist painter Gustave Moreau at the École des Beaux-Arts. In 1917 he moved to the Nice area, where he lived and worked until his death on 3 November 1954.
Matisse is known above all for colour. In the summers of 1904 and 1905 in the South of France, he and André Derain painted in bright, clashing tones that earned them the nickname fauves, or wild beasts. His Dance (I) of 1909, now at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, reduces each figure to a single flowing line. When illness kept him from painting late in life, Henri Matisse cut shapes from painted paper, gathered in the book Jazz (1947).
Henri Matisse prints: reproductions of paintings, prints, paper cut-outs and exhibition posters by the French painter Henri Matisse, from the 1890s to the 1950s. This selection concentrates on the Nice-period interiors of 1917 to 1923, with open windows, women in patterned dresses and bouquets of anemones. It also covers the Fauve views of Collioure and Saint-Tropez, still lifes of fruit and flowers, and later work in flat, bright colour, including Jazz and several Mourlot exhibition posters.
