Itō Jakuchū (1716–1800) was one of the most individual painters of 18th-century Japan — a self-taught eccentric whose Colorful Realm of Living Beings series (30 silk scrolls, now in the Imperial Household collection) constitute the most detailed, vibrant, and visually complex body of work in Edo painting. His botanical and animal works combine scientific precision with hallucinatory colour and pattern in a voice that is entirely, unmistakably his own.
