Jamini Roy (1887–1972) was one of India's most original modern artists and a pioneer of the nationalist art movement. Trained academically in Calcutta, he deliberately turned away from European conventions to draw on the folk traditions of Bengal — particularly the Kalighat pat scroll paintings — developing a bold, flat, deeply rhythmic style that was entirely his own. His works are held in major collections worldwide.
