Jamini Roy (1887–1972) was India's first great modern painter to develop a visual language rooted in Indian folk tradition rather than European academic painting — an artist who drew on the Kalighat pat scroll painters of Bengal and on Santali and tribal art to create a bold, flat, intensely graphic style that was simultaneously ancient and radically modern. His horses, cats, Radha-Krishna compositions, and Christian subjects painted in the Bengal idiom are now among the most collected works of modern Indian art, held at the Victoria Memorial, Kolkata, the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, and in international collections.
