Two armored figures rest before a rain-swept river landscape

Rain streaks a dark sky over a wide river crossed by a long wooden bridge, with forested hills on the far bank and a small boat on the water. Below, two costumed warriors in bold stage make-up wear robes patterned with an interlocking key design in orange and cream, trimmed with shaggy orange and blue fringe; the standing figure grips a tall pale staff with a T-shaped head, the kneeling one carries two swords. A red title cartouche sits at the upper right, Hiroshige's diamond seal at the left and Kunisada's red signature cartouche at the lower right.

The Fifty-three Stations by Two Brushes (1854–57) paired the two most popular print artists of late Edo: Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858), the landscape master of the Tōkaidō road, and Utagawa Kunisada (1786–1865), the leading designer of actor and figure prints. Each sheet sets a Kunisada figure — an actor, a beauty, a legendary character — before a Hiroshige view of the station behind. The series is held by the British Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
