Shiro Kasamatsu (1898–1991) was one of the leading landscape printmakers of the Shin Hanga movement — an artist whose nocturnal urban scenes, rain-soaked avenues, and moonlit ponds brought an entirely contemporary Japanese sensibility to the woodblock tradition. His works, particularly his blue nocturnes of Tokyo landmarks, stand among the most atmospheric images of 20th-century Japanese printmaking.
