Du Fu (712–770) is one of the most celebrated poets in the history of Chinese literature — paired with Li Bai as one of the two supreme poets of the Tang dynasty, and often called the Poet Sage (詩聖). Where Li Bai was the romantic visionary, Du Fu was the humanist witness: his poems respond to war, displacement, poverty, and natural beauty with a technical mastery and moral depth that Chinese literary tradition has never surpassed. His Eight Immortals of the Wine Cup (飲中八仙歌), a vivid group portrait of eight celebrated drinkers, is among his most exuberant and widely admired works. Transcriptions of Du Fu's poems in Chinese calligraphy are among the most prized objects in East Asian brushwork tradition.
