Black Art Prints
Black art prints: paintings, posters, woodblock prints and illustrations in which black is a dominant colour, often as a dark background or strong outline. Modernist works include Bauhaus exhibition posters, compositions by László Moholy-Nagy, Oskar Schlemmer, Theo van Doesburg and Piet Mondrian, and the Metropolis film poster (1927). Dark Romantic and Symbolist paintings include Henry Fuseli's The Nightmare (1781), Francisco de Goya's Black Paintings (about 1820), John Martin's Pandemonium (1841), and works by Mikhail Vrubel, Gustave Moreau, William Blake and Hugo Simberg. Japanese night scenes come from Kawase Hasui and Ohara Koson. Also included are Rembrandt's The Storm on the Sea of Galilee (1633) and Caspar David Friedrich's Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog (1818).

Horace Vernet (1789–1863) was a French painter, born in the Louvre while his parents were living there during the Revolution, into a family of painters that included his father Carle Vernet and grandfather Claude-Joseph Vernet. Trained within this family workshop rather than through strict academic channels, he developed a lasting disdain for the high-minded seriousness of official French art. He specialized in military scenes depicting French soldiers in an informal, vernacular manner, and in Orientalist subjects drawn from his travels in North Africa, working with a productivity that made him one of the most popular painters of the July Monarchy. His paintings are held by the Louvre, the Palace of Versailles and the Wallace Collection.
