About Ohara Koson

Ohara Koson was a Japanese print designer and painter, born Ohara Matao in Kanazawa in 1877. He studied painting with Suzuki Kason, and he lived and worked in Tokyo, where he died in 1945. Very little is recorded about his private life. He worked under several art names over nearly four decades, signing his work Koson, Shōson or Hōson depending on the period and the publisher.

Ohara Koson is best known for kachō-e, or bird-and-flower prints: herons, crows, sparrows, blossoming branches, grasses and insects, drawn closely and printed with soft colour. Early in his career he also designed triptychs of the Russo-Japanese War. From about 1926 he worked with the publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō as part of shin hanga, the new prints movement that brought a fresh look to traditional woodblock printing. His prints sold widely in the United States in the 1920s and 1930s, and today they are held by the British Museum, the Rijksmuseum and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Ohara Koson prints: reproductions of the Japanese bird-and-flower woodblock prints Ohara Koson designed in the early twentieth century. The collection includes Heron in Snow (Black Ground), Crow at Full Moon, Five Geese in Flight at Full Moon, Carp or Koi (1926) and Cherry Blossoms and Mount Fuji (1934).

This selection concentrates on Koson's birds: herons, egrets, geese, crows, pheasants, swallows and songbirds, often on a single branch, in snow or against a full moon. It also includes his fish, monkeys and flower studies, such as Goldfish and Wisteria and Lily and Black Swallowtail, and a small group of landscapes with boats, torii gates and Mount Fuji.

The single subjects and soft backgrounds suit bedrooms, bathrooms, entryways and narrow walls, and the tall formats hang well in pairs. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
