A full moon breaks through banks of cloud over a sheepfold at night, framed by bare, twisted trees. Along the far rail, wolves' eyes glint white in the dark, and more wolves are already over the fence, dropping into the pen from both sides. The flock scatters across the straw, heads thrown back and mouths open, while at the centre a wolf sinks its teeth into a crying lamb. Pale fleece is cut in fine engraved lines against deep shadow.

Gustave Doré (1832–1883) was the most prolific and visually ambitious illustrator of the 19th century — a French artist whose engravings for Dante's Inferno, the Bible, Cervantes, Milton, and Rabelais defined the visual imagination of an era. Working at a scale and with a dramatic intensity that no illustrator before or since has matched, he transformed book illustration into a form of monumental art. His London engravings documenting Victorian poverty, his apocalyptic biblical visions, and his fairy-tale forests remain among the most powerful graphic images of the 19th century.
