About Claude Monet
Claude Monet was a French painter, born in Paris on 14 November 1840. When he was about five his family moved to Le Havre, on the Normandy coast, where the painter Eugène Boudin introduced him to working outdoors. In Paris he studied in the studio of Charles Gleyre and met Frédéric Bazille, Alfred Sisley and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. In 1883 he settled at Giverny, west of Paris, where he lived until his death on 5 December 1926.
Monet's painting Impression, Sunrise (1872), shown at the first group exhibition in 1874, gave its name to Impressionism, the movement that tried to capture fleeting light and colour with quick, visible brushstrokes. He often painted one subject again and again as the light changed, as in his haystacks (1890 to 1891) and Rouen Cathedral (1894). At Giverny he made a water-lily pond and painted it more than 250 times. Claude Monet's great Water Lilies panels went on display at the Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris in 1927.
