About Gustav Klimt
Gustav Klimt was an Austrian painter, born on 14 July 1862 in Baumgarten, near Vienna, the son of a gold engraver. From 1876 he trained at the Vienna School of Decorative Arts, and with his brother Ernst and Franz Matsch he set up a studio painting murals, including work for the Vienna Burgtheater in 1888. In 1897 he helped found the Vienna Secession, a group of artists breaking away from the official art establishment, and served as its president. He died in Vienna on 6 February 1918, after a stroke followed by pneumonia.
Klimt's best-known paintings come from his so-called golden phase, when gold filled his richly patterned surfaces. The Beethoven Frieze (1902), The Kiss (1907 to 1908) and the Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I (1907), now at the Neue Galerie in New York, all set soft, sensual figures against shimmering ornament. Gustav Klimt also painted quiet landscapes, many made during summers at the Attersee lake in Austria.
Gustav Klimt prints: reproductions of paintings, posters and drawings by the Austrian painter Gustav Klimt, made between 1883 and 1918. The collection includes Nuda Veritas (1899), The Three Ages of Woman (1905), Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I (1907), Water Serpents II (1907) and Death and Life (1910).
This selection concentrates on Klimt's portraits of Viennese women, from early realist portraits of the 1890s to the patterned, gold-era portraits of Adele Bloch-Bauer, Fritza Riedler and Eugenia Primavesi. It also includes allegories such as Danaë and Judith II, his Secession posters, a group of Attersee landscapes and gardens, and a few late drawings and studies.
The gold portraits and allegories suit living rooms, bedrooms and entryways, and the green Attersee landscapes work well in dining rooms and studies. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
