About Paul Klee
Paul Klee was a Swiss-German painter and draughtsman, born on 18 December 1879 in Münchenbuchsee, near Bern, to parents who were both trained musicians. He studied art in Munich, briefly in Franz von Stuck's class at the Academy, and in 1911 met the artists of the Blue Rider group. A trip to Tunisia in April 1914 with August Macke and Louis Moilliet sharpened his sense of colour. He taught at the Bauhaus from 1921 to 1931 and then at the Düsseldorf Academy until the Nazis dismissed him in 1933, when he returned to Bern. He died on 29 June 1940 in Muralto, near Locarno.
Klee's pictures are small, playful and thoughtful, built from line, signs and glowing patches of colour. His Twittering Machine (1922), held by the Museum of Modern Art in New York, turns a few wiry birds into a strange musical contraption. He worked at a remarkable pace, making 1,253 works in 1939 alone. The Zentrum Paul Klee in Bern holds the largest collection of his art.
Paul Klee prints: reproductions of paintings, watercolours and drawings by the Swiss-German artist Paul Klee, made between 1914 and 1940. The collection includes The Firmament Above the Temple (1922), Red Balloon (1922), Polyphonic Architecture (1930), Fruits on Red (1930) and Angelus Militans (1940).
This selection covers Klee's colour-block and grid compositions, such as Red/Green Architecture and the watercolour squares of 1914, alongside his cities, gardens and plant studies. It also includes many of his figures, masks and angels from the 1930s, painted with heavier black lines in the last years of his life. The mix shows both his bright Bauhaus colour work and his darker late style.
The small-scale colour studies suit studies, home offices and hallways, and the brighter compositions work well in living rooms and children's rooms. Several pieces pair well in sets. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
