Sunlight
Sorolla's sail-menders at work on a flowered porch while the sun falls through the leaves in coins of light, Sargent's woman in white in a Tangier courtyard, Monet's Rouen Cathedral dissolving in afternoon sun, Munch's sun blazing over the rocks of the Norwegian coast, Segantini's shepherdess in the glare of an Alpine noon, Caillebotte's floor scrapers working in a stripe of window light. Dappled shade and full glare: pictures where the sun is the subject. All chosen by hand, with free shipping and import duties covered.

An enormous cream sail is spread across the floor of a vine-covered pergola, its folds filling the lower half of the canvas in white, grey and ochre. Around it a group works: a woman in a white skirt and pink puffed sleeves with an embroidered belt draws the edge taut at the left, a man in a red-orange shirt and straw hat bends over the cloth at the right, and other women lean in behind. Geraniums and climbing green run up the posts; beyond the opening lies flat sunlit country.
Joaquín Sorolla (1863–1923) was the painter of Spanish sunlight. From the 1890s he worked on the beaches of Valencia, painting bathers, fishermen, sails and children in the surf with a broad, rapid touch that caught the glare of the Mediterranean, and his exhibitions in Paris, London and New York made him one of the most celebrated painters of his day. His last great work was the Vision of Spain for the Hispanic Society of America. His paintings are held by the Museo Sorolla in Madrid, the Prado and the Hispanic Society.
