E. Harper Johnson (1901–1958) was an American illustrator and muralist who specialised in historical illustration, particularly African and African American history. His paintings of ancient African civilisations — including his celebrated series on Piankhy the Great, the Nubian pharaoh who conquered Egypt around 730 BC — brought a visual dignity and scholarly seriousness to subjects that mainstream illustration of his era routinely ignored or distorted.
