Louis Valtat (1869–1952) was a French painter who anticipated Fauvism before the term existed — producing works of bold colour, unmodulated surfaces, and expressive brushwork in the 1890s that predated the Fauvist explosion of 1905 by nearly a decade. A friend of Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Matisse, he was championed by the dealer Ambroise Vollard and exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants. His still lifes, seascapes, and street scenes are among the most joyful and chromatic works of the French Post-Impressionist tradition — and remain significantly undervalued relative to their historical importance.
